แถลงการณ์ เรื่อง ชี้แจงบทบาทการทำหน้าที่ของสื่อมวลชน
ตามที่ พลเอกประยุทธ์ จันทร์โอชา นายกรัฐมนตรี และหัวหน้าคณะรักษาความสงบแห่งชาติ ได้วิพากษ์การทำหน้าที่ของสื่อมวลชนว่าเป็นการนำเสนอโดยขาดข้อเท็จจริง และไม่คำนึงถึงความเสียหายที่อาจเกิดขึ้นกับประเทศชาตินั้น สมาคมนักข่าววิทยุและโทรทัศน์ไทย ขอชี้แจงว่า
๑. สื่อมวลชนทุกแขนงมีหน้าที่และความรับผิดชอบต่อการนำเสนอข้อมูลข่าวสารและปรากฏการณ์ต่างๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นในสังคม สะท้อนสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นนำเสนอสู่สาธารณะ เพื่อความเข้าใจของคนในสังคม และกระบวนการแก้ไขของผู้มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องทุกระดับ
๒. ในการทำหน้าที่ของสื่อมวลชน อาจมีข้อบกพร่อง ผิดพลาด และอาจจะกระทบต่อบทบาทอำนาจขององค์กรต่างๆ ของสังคม ซึ่งในความผิดพลาดดังกล่าวนั้นสื่อมวลชนก็พร้อมที่จะเยียวยาแก้ไข และแสวงหาทางออก กระบวนการต่างๆ เพื่อให้ได้ข้อเท็จจริงที่ถูกต้องต่อสังคม เพราะสื่อมวลชนพร้อมจะรับฟังเสียงสะท้อนและความเห็นของทุกฝ่าย
๓. จากกรณีที่นายกรัฐมนตรี ได้มีท่าทีแสดงออกถึงความไม่พอใจต่อการทำหน้าที่ของสื่อมวลชนเมื่อวันที่ ๒๕ มีนาคม ๒๕๕๘ ที่ผ่านมา และขอให้องค์กรสื่อไปตรวจสอบดูแลกำกับกันเองนั้น ทางสมาคมนักข่าววิทยุและโทรทัศน์ไทย ขอชี้แจงว่าประเด็นดังกล่าวสอดคล้องกับแนวทางการระดมความเห็นของคณะทำงานปฏิรูปสื่อที่ผลักดันให้กลไกการกำกับดูแลกันเองของสื่อมวลชนสามารถเกิดขึ้นได้จริงและมีประสิทธิภาพบนพื้นฐานของความรับผิดชอบต่อสังคม
๔. กรณีการทำหน้าที่ของคุณฐปณีย์ เอียดศรีไชย ผู้สื่อข่าวสถานีโทรทัศน์ไทยทีวีสีช่อง 3 ในกรณีนำเสนอรายงานข่าวเกี่ยวกับแรงงานประมงไทย ที่ตกค้างอยู่ในประเทศอินโดนีเซียนั้น ทางสมาคมฯ เห็นว่า เป็นการทำหน้าที่ของสื่อมวลชนที่ต้องการสะท้อนปัญหาและความทุกข์ยากของคนไทยด้วยกันที่เกิดขึ้นต่อเนื่องมาเป็นเวลานาน เพื่อนำไปสู่การแก้ไขปัญหาในทุกภาคส่วนร่วมกันอย่างจริงจัง
สมาคมนักข่าววิทยุและโทรทัศน์ไทย ขอยืนยันว่าการทำหน้าที่ของสื่อมวลชนนั้น ต้องทำหน้าที่เผยแพร่ข้อมูลข่าวสารเพื่อประโยชน์สาธารณะ และมีความรับผิดชอบในการนำเสนอข้อมูลข่าวสารนั้นๆ ข้อมูลและความคิดเห็นต่างถือเป็นความก้าวหน้าและการเปิดกว้างของประเทศที่มีประชาธิปไตย แต่ทั้งนี้ย่อมตั้งอยู่บนพื้นฐานเพื่อประโยชน์ของประเทศชาติเป็นสำคัญ

Statement: Clarification of the Roles of Journalists
This is a statement in response to criticism of journalists by Prime Minister and Chief of the National Council for Peace and Order, General Prayuth Chanocha. He has accused journalists of neglecting truth in their reporting and for neglecting to consider the consequences of their reports for Thailand’s national interests. The Thai Broadcast Journalists Association would like to respond as follows:
1. Every journalist is committed to certain roles and responsibilities in delivering information to society. Each journalist reflects on the benefits of their work for the public who they wish to see have an informed understandings of other people, important social issues and activities of the government. This will empower the public by making their voices informed.
2. In reporting, mistakes may occur with regrettable effects for social authorities including the government. When such things happen, journalists are professionally obligated to publicist their mistakes and ensure the public is Informed truthfully relevant facts truthfully. On all issues, journalists are obliged to listen to all sides and reflect their opinions accurately.
3. On March 25th 2015, Prime Minister Prayuth Chanocha expressed his dissatisfaction toward the roles of Thai journalists, requesting that they be supervised by media organizations. The Thai Broadcast Journalists Association holds that the Prime Minister is acting as a voice for the media reform committee which pushes lobbying for self-regulation of media professionals.
4. Regarding the case of Channel 3 reporter, Ms.Thapanee Ietsrichai who reported about forced workers on trawlers near Indonesia: the Thai Broadcast Journalists Association views the reporting of problems and hardships of fellow Thais as appropriate and hope that our government will take notice and address such problems.
The Thai Broadcast Journalists Association reaffirms that the role of journalists is to distribute news and information truthfully for the public and be responsible in their reporting. The reporting of full ranges of differing opinions is essential in a democratic country, but the national interest has to also be taken into account.
